Richard Kind

Richard Kind was born in Trenton, New Jersey and grew up in Buck’s County, Pennsylvania, graduating from Northwestern University. In 1983, he came to the Second City Mainstage after being a member of the Practical Theater Company founded by Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Brad Hall, among others. Kind performed in several resident stage productions (alongside the future voice of Homer Simpson, Dan Castellaneta) in Chicago and the short-lived Second City outpost in Santa Monica, as well as the alum-laden 110 Lombard pilot with Mike Myers, Ryan Stiles, Bonnie Hunt, and Don Lake. Kind was also part of the Chicago company that brought a run of the show Orwell That Ends Well to New York’s Village Gate before getting his first TV break as an ensemble member in Carol Burnett’s Carol and Company.

Kind is probably best known for his work on sitcoms. In 1992, he was cast in the recurring role of “Dr. Mark Devanow” on Mad About You. His character appeared less frequently in later seasons, because Kind was also playing the role of “Paul Lassiter” on Spin City. In addition to starring in the Amazon Prime Video original season Red Oaks and HBO’s Luck, he has had guest spots on numerous television shows, including Two and a Half Men and The Goldbergs and recurring roles on shows like Curb your Enthusiasm and Gotham. Movie credits include The ProducersA Serious ManThe Station Agent, and 2013’s Oscar winner for Best Picture, Argo.

Kind’s voice is just as recognizable as his expressive face. He has lent his voice to several animated films: “Bing Bong” in Inside Out, “Molt” in A Bug’s Life, and “Van” in Cars and Cars 2. You can also her him on episodes of the animated television series Dora, the ExplorerThe Penguins of Madagascar, and American Dad.

Kind is also an accomplished Broadway actor, playing the role of “Max Bialystock” in the Mel Brooks smash hit The Producers.
