Chicago has a housing crisis. It also has narrow lots, outdated rules, and a building code that can make small apartment buildings surprisingly hard to build.
Steps to Better Housing is a civic education comedy show about why modernizing our housing codes could help Chicago build more homes, better apartments, and more family-sized housing in the neighborhoods people already love. Through sketch comedy, improv, interviews, and (fun!) policy explainers, Funny You Should Care takes on single-stair reform, missing middle housing, fire safety, zoning, bureaucracy, and the deeply Chicago belief that “that would never work here.”
It’s part comedy show, part (fun!) policy briefing, and part group therapy for anyone who has ever wondered why Chicago can reverse a river but can’t seem to build a four-flat.
Come laugh, learn, and find out why one staircase might be a step toward better housing.
