Jim Fisher

Jim Fisher

JIM FISHER is a Chicago Second City alumnus who appeared in 13 Main Stage productions with, among others, Harold Ramis, Joe Flaherty, John Belushi, Brian DoyleMurray and Eugenie Ross-Leming. Starting as a member of the first National Touring Company, he went on to become involved in a number of firsts while at SC – first cast member to direct a show, first to compile the initial official list of alumni (there were only 76 at the time), first actor to be submitted by SC to The Joseph Jefferson Awards (didn’t succeed) and initial founder of Second City Creative Services to create corporate comedy presentations.

He left SC with fellow alumni Jim Staahl and Tino Insana, forming a comedy trio, ‘The Graduates’. They performed on college campuses, clubs and in corporate presentations across the country and on numerous television shows, including “The Tonight Show”. In due course, the two Jims parlayed their improvisation, performing and writing skills into a successful writing career that encompassed screenplays for feature films (“The Beverly Hillbillies”/ “Under Surveillance”/”Blow Hard”/”Crash Test Dummies”); Movies of the Week (“Here Come The Munsters”); television variety shows and sitcoms (“SCTV”/ “Laugh Trax”/“Sledge Hammer”/“Young Hercules”/”Lightning Force”/”Married People”/”Big City Comedy”/“Lil Abner in Dogpatch Tonight”/“Steve Martin’s Twilight Theater”/“Howie” [SE]); animation (“Bobby’s World” [Cocreated/SE/Prod]; “Toonsylvania” for DreamWorks/“Dragon Tales” [SE]/“Veggie Tales”/“Liberty’s Kids”/“Sabrina”/“Buzz Lightyear Of Star Command”/“Inspector Gadget” [SE]) as well as pilots for NBC, CBS and FOX. Some of those they have created projects for and/or worked with include Steven Spielberg, Steve Martin, Steve Allen, Sid Caesar, Dana Carvey, Martin Mull, Rodney Dangerfield, Dietrich Bader, Howie Mandel, Fred Willard, Louie Anderson, Ryan Stiles, Bill Prady and Mike Myers.

As a teacher, Jim taught improvisation and sketch writing at the original Second City Training Center in Santa Monica, CA and later at the Los Angeles Training Center in Hollywood,
where as the first Director of the Writing Conservatory, he was instrumental in developing the Sitcom writing track.  At the Chicago Training Center he has participated in a Writing Seminar,
speaking on how animation writing differs from other scripting formats. He has also run two workshops – “Is My Script A Movie?” that ferrets out story problems from the writers quick pitch; and  “The Writers Table – A Sitcom Immersion” where each participant comes away with a firm grasp of the requirements and skills necessary to create their own sitcom.  Jim also mentors writers individually or together with Jim Staahl on their unique, screenwriter consulting website TheWritersTable.com.
