Class Overview

The Second City logo of a solitary bentwood chair is symbolic for our traditional lack of scenery and costumes because “all we need is a chair and a stage.” As our actors perform several characters each night under these limitations, it forces us to truly define our characters. This class will use improvisation to explore the many layers of a Second City style character. These exercises are designed to build emotional and physical connections between the actor and the character. Great comic characters are grounded in reality and are a truthful reflection of our society. Improvisation allows the actor to dive deep and explore each character’s point of view. With a deeper understanding of our character’s point of view, we can start to confidently navigate our reactions to the people and the world around them. The tools used in this class will be ones you can use for the rest of your life while developing and honing your characters. All of these skills will be taught using improvisation. No scripts. You must have completed Acting 1 or Intro to Acting before taking this course.
