The Deconstruction was originally developed by Del Close and iO’s The Family. This improv longform involves a series of scenes inspired by an initial longer scene. By the end of the set, the initial scene will have been explored in every fashion possible. The Deconstruction is great for advanced improvisers that want to learn how to play thematically, explore group mind, and recreate patterns.
David was taught The Deconstruction by the legendary Rush Howell (iO’s Super Dreamers) and performed it on the iO Mainstage with Sandbox Democracy in the early 2000’s. And he has taught The Deconstruction to former Second City students—Craigslist Playdate, who perform The Deconstruction currently at comedy theaters all over Chicago.
David Montgomery is a faculty member at The Second City and has performed, produced and directed improv for more than 20 years.
