What is ScruggsFest?
Mary Scruggs was head of the Writing Program from 2001–2011. Mary was a generous and hilarious force that mentored so many women here at The Second City. At a time when women were competing against one another, Mary made it clear that we should lift each other up.

Jay Steigmann, current Head of the Writing Program, put it this way: “Mary pulled me into a meeting one day and said, ‘Jay, I’ve decided that your purpose here is to elevate female voices and be a mentor to women.’ I took that challenge very seriously. It’s not every day someone gives your life meaning.”

The goal of ScruggsFest is to encourage and grow female-identifying writers at the Second City Training Center. We call on you to submit your work to ScruggsFest to get the opportunity to see your work performed or workshopped by professionals.
