The impactful power of comedy is evident from our pool of legendary alumni. The same passion and drive that these individuals possess is what we seek in our interns.

The theatrical production process has many opportunities for creativity across a multitude of departments. Skills in areas ranging from finance to graphic design are all essential parts of the high quality shows produced here at The Second City. For all positions, the driving force is a strong passion to enhance the future of comedy.

The environment of The Second City is fast-paced, exciting and at times high pressure. We’re looking for individuals who are able to think on their feet — focusing simultaneously on specific details and big ideas.

Interns will be responsible for assisting with day to day tasks in their department as well as for larger projects that will span the duration of the internship. Both tasks offer ample room for creativity.

Ideal applicants:

  • Have a genuine interest in arts administration and/or producing
  • Possess initiative, conscientiousness and strong self-management skills
  • Are flexible and comfortable in a fast-paced work environment
  • Have excellent interpersonal, organizational and communication skills

  • Must be at least 18 years of age to apply
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Computer proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel especially) is a must, and experience with Google suite is a plus.
  • Availability: 6 hours/day, 3 days/week
  • Housing and transportation not provided
  • Internship is unpaid

“My summer interning at Second City helped me learn the ropes of theater producing in a fun and supportive environment. My time there gave me new skills, great contacts, hilarious memories, and increased confidence in my professional abilities. More than a decade later I am still working in theater producing and using the skills I picked up at Second City every day!”

Daniel Strauss

“Being an intern at the Second City was a terrific introduction to the building. I got to meet a ton of the staff and made friends I have to this day. I also got a free t shirt and hoodie at the end of the summer. But I don’t know if they still do that.”

Sarah Dell’Amico
Second City Intern 2012
Current Ensemble Cast Member Second City’s Fast, Loud, and Funny

“I had just moved to Chicago from South Florida when I became an intern for the Second City. I was in the city for maybe 3 months? When I moved here in September 2011, I immediately did everything I could at Second City. I was interning and taking my conservatory class during the day and serving tables and rehearsing for writing 6 shows at night. I basically lived at Second City my first 6 months in Chicago. Interning was the best because I could make copies. I love making copies. They are nice and warm when you take them off the printer. Interning literally kept me warm and alive my first 6 months freezing in Chicago.”
