The Improv Program is a complete foundation in the principles of scenic improvisation as practiced at The Second City. Based in the work of Viola Spolin, this program covers all elements of the improvisational process.
The Conservatory is The Second City's professional training program, a deep and intense study of our cornerstone process of using improvisation to develop sketch comedy. This program creates artists who can find and create good ideas, develop them with an ensemble, and perform them with courage and commitment.
Our core Comedy Writing program is a yearlong course of study introducing students to the fundamentals of sketch comedy writing and culminating in a one-act sketch comedy show performed by top Training Center talent and produced by the writing students themselves.
Whether you want to get better at writing for yourself or for others, this program is for you!
Develop your advanced improv skills! Create more nuanced, textured, and meaningful scenes, assemble those scenes into interesting formats, and most importantly learn to play for 15 to 45 minutes off a single suggestion.
The Acting Program empowers students with the necessary core skills to take responsibility for their own growth and learning as an actor. This program offers a unique method of acting that enables students to discover skills found in the physical, emotional, intellectual, and spiritual aspects of the human condition.
This program is great for beginners or actors who have been out of the classroom for a while.
Stand-Up & Storytelling
Discover your unique comic voice! Stand-up uses an improvisational approach to the creation and delivery of solo comic material. Craft your set, learn joke construction, and discover how to navigate your first open mic. Storytelling courses will help you bring structure and craft to your stories.
Become a better public speaker at presentations and speeches. This class will provide you with a foundation for public speaking, along with several opportunities to practice, refine, and reinforce your learning. Each week, you will receive one-on-one, in-depth coaching and feedback. Develop greater public speaking success professionally and personally.
Improv Intensives explore the same concepts taught in our Improv Level A-C classes, but in a shorter time period. Same concepts, same fun, same cost! Intensives happen over two weekends (Friday night, Saturday, and Sunday afternoon) or over one long weekend (three days in a row from 10am - 4pm).
The Advanced Improv Program places more specific and specialized material in front of a more advanced student. These are great classes for the working actor. Offerings include improvisational acting, scene work, and long form.
Rules fall away and satirical points of view come to the forefront, preparing students for work at The Second City and beyond.
The Physical Comedy Program is a unique movement program focusing on developing the physical skills of the performer. From clowning to slapstick to stage combat, physical comedy has delighted audiences and been a great way for performers to add detail and range to their characters. This program helps the performer develop tools to become a skilled artist of this classic art form.
TV, Film & Digital courses empower content creators with the knowledge of what it takes to be successful in the TV and Film industries. The classes in this program focus on technical skills, industry knowledge, and real world experience so students can turn their work on the Training Centre stages into a career in TV, Film or the Web.
