Improv Program

The Improv Program is a complete foundation in the principles of scenic improvisation as practiced at The Second City. Based in the work of Viola Spolin, this program covers all elements of the improvisational process. Students begin with ensemble, environment, and object work and end by rehearsing and performing their own fully improvised show.

The Improv Program is a complete foundation in the principles of scenic improvisation as practiced at The Second City. Based in the work of Viola Spolin, this three level program covers all elements of the improvisational process. The typical improv class meets once a week for seven weeks.

Improv 1

Improvising Basics – While learning the building blocks of improv, this term builds confidence through ensemble energy.

Improvising Scenes – A study of emotion, relationship, point-of-view, and environment; this term focuses on what makes an improvised scene work.

Improv 3

Improvising Games and Advancing Scene Work – While continuing an enhancement of improvisational scene work, this term explores improvising shortform games.

EXPRESS! Meeting twice-weekly, Improv Express explores the same concepts taught in each level but in a shorter time period! Same concepts, same fun, same cost!

Improv 1 & 2 are also available as 3-day or 5-day Intensives.

Improv 1-3: Start to Finish

Get it done all at once! This class will take you through the entire Improv Program levels 1-3. You will meet twice a week for 10 weeks and cover the building blocks of improv, improvising scenes, improvising games and advancing scene Work, and getting ready for your Conservatory audition!

No need to worry about scheduling, this is all scheduled for you! No need to worry about the early bird discount, you’re guaranteed the lowest price! And no need to worry about canceled classes; this is your one and only class that will take you from start to finish.

Improv for Veterans

Improv for Veterans

  • Alpha, Bravo, Charlie

Improv for Veterans is a multi-level curriculum specifically catered to anyone who has served in the armed forces. This class aims to teach improv, while also connecting with other veterans, building communication skills, sharing experiences with veterans from other branches, and playing around. Improv for Veterans is taught by a Second City instructor and military veteran with improv experience.

Improv for Veterans Level Alpha – Beginner Improv

In the alpha level of this class, students will learn skills needed to create strong improvised scenes. These skills include building ensemble, giving and taking focus, object work, and the concept of “yes, and.”

Improv for Veterans Level Bravo – Character Development

In the bravo level of this class, students will delve deeper into scene work, with specific focus on character development. They will explore creating characters through internal motivations, like point of view, status, wants and intentions, and external ones, like experimenting with physicality. Students also continue to explore scene work, with special emphasis on how to create scenes inspired by personal stories.

Improv for Veterans Level Charlie – Scene Work

In this final level, students will take the skills developed in alpha and beta, and apply them by creating a study of structure, content, and character wants; this term focuses on what makes an improvised scene work.

Long Form Program

Long Form Program

  • Levels 1-4

The Long Form Improv program explores the kind of improv where a group of performers take one suggestion and create a theatrical piece inspired by it.

Long Form 1: Scene Work

In Level 1, students will focus on solid scene work grounded in relationship. These relationships are built from rooted characters and real emotions. If “game” is explored in these scenes, it will be based in recognizable human behavior.

Long Form 2: Group Mind

In Level 2, students will explore the meaning of ensemble. When group mind is achieved, it drives the flow of the long form. Tag outs, cut-aways, call backs, split scenes, openings, full cast scenes and other techniques are be used to weave the connecting threads of all forms.

3.5 hours, 7 weeks ◆ 1 class show

Long Form 3: Structure

In Level 3, students will touch on popular long form structures and learn the basic principals behind most long forms. Students will hone in on a specific long form by the end of the term for the final performance.

3.5 hours, 7 weeks ◆ 2 class shows

Long Form 4: Create Your Own Form

In Long 4, students will be cast in a long form ensemble and focus on creating an original form.  This form will be showcased in a final run of performances in the Second City theater.

Auditions will be held for this class.

3.5 hours, 14 weeks ◆ 12 class shows

In Level 3, students will touch on popular long form structures and learn the basic principals behind most long forms. Students will hone in on a specific long form by the end of the term for the final performance.
