Intro to Digital

Intro to Digital is for teens who are interested in creating digital data or who want to improve they way they are currently creating digital data. Digital media is huge and getting bigger. Young comics are expected to have a digital presence to represent their work. Even if the student does not plan on going into comedy, this class will help them post better content for their personal pages on Snapchat, YouTube, etc.

Students will learn the fundamentals of digital comedy production including filming, basic editing, and distributions methods. They will learn how to use the “Yes, and” approach in the digital world to improve their posts. This technique involves improvising short scenes to get them tight before students shoot them. In concept it is a way to edit before you shoot. They will also learn how to think visually when composing shots and generating content.

Students will get a lot of hands-on experience shooting, editing, and distributing (via social media and content sharing sites) short digital pieces (roughly ten to thirty seconds long). Students will develop characters and hone their shooting skills to create better content. There will also be homework assignments for students involving filming and/or editing. Students will not be obligated to post anything they shoot.

Intro to Digital is open to any student ages 14-18. It meets once a week for two hours over a seven week term. There is a presentation of materials created during this class the final week.

Advanced Digital

Digital media is huge and getting bigger. Young comics are expected to have a digital presence to represent their work. Even if the student does not plan on going into comedy, this class will help them post better content for their personal pages on Snapchat, YouTube, etc.

Students will learn advanced skills and begin exploring longer projects in different mediums using innovative distribution techniques. They will learn how to shoot and edit full comedy scenes and man-on-the-street segments. This includes controlling comedic pacing with edits. They will learn how to get their content to look closer to broadcast quality.
