Our Stand-Up classes are for kids and teens who are interested in learning about stand-up comedy. The skills required to do stand up develop skills of observation and define one’s point of view. Also, participants of this class will develop valuable public speaking skills. Standing up in front of a room full of people who expect you to be funny takes a lot of guts. This class will build students’ confidence to allow them to do that.
The participant in this stand-up for teens program will be introduced to the fundamental skills of the art of Stand-Up Comedy. They will learn many useful tips on topics like microphone technique and working the room. They will study joke structure and why some jokes work and some jokes don’t. They will also learn how to develop material from everyday life.
Each week will focus on some writing technique and joke format. Students will write and present jokes in different styles like riddles and one-liners. They will also build the courage to bring humor into their everyday conversation.
Stand-Up is offered in two different age groups, ages 11-13 and ages 14-18. No previous experience is required, but there will be writing assignments and some improv experience will be helpful. It meets once a week for two hours over a seven week term. At the end of the term students will perform a three- to five-minute set in a stand-up showcase.
