Your Show Live! (Online)

Online Dating. Sleepaway Camp. Coming out. 90’s TV Shows. Some of the best sketch shows start with a strong central theme. In Your Show Live!, you can celebrate your experiences, obsessions and areas of expertise by learning how to create your own themed sketch show. Students will be given weekly feedback and guidance, shown how to create a Second City-style running order with scenes, black-outs and songs—and guided through the production proposal process. Theme not required in advance. We will find it!

Your Show Live! is open to students who have completed Online Sketch Writing 1 or with program head approval.

This workshop is not offered every term. If you would like to be informed when it becomes available, please click here.

Major Concepts: Creating a theme that can sustain a whole show. POV. Writing different types of scenes commonly found in a Second City-style sketch revue.

Class Work Examples: Write a silent scene (with stage directions) that explores a physicalized, representative moment of your theme (i.e. the daily grind shown through waking up, getting dressed, getting coffee, etc.). Choose music that complements or contrasts it.

Commitment: 2-5 hours per week
Since this is a more advanced course and requires writing a one-hour show in four weeks, your time commitment is self-directed. If you are starting from scratch, it may take more. If you have some sketches under your belt and a good idea of what you want to write about, it may take less.

Technical Requirements: Word Program, Streaming services, PDF-formatting software
