Writing Comedy News

The Daily Show proved that comedy can be entertaining, informative, occasionally disruptive. It birthed a genre that comedian-commentators like Stephen Colbert, John Oliver, Samantha Bee, Larry Wilmore, and Bassem Youssef spun into their own weird forms. In this class, we'll study how to write comedy news from a comedic and journalistic standpoint. Students will develop a news segment, focusing on tone, voice, and content. We'll also play with how to deliver comedy news in different forms like the Twitter thread and, who knows?, maybe a TikTok dance number. Note: This class builds on skills and topics covered in Using Journalism to Write Comedy, but isn't a prerequisite.
