Specialty 5-Day Intensives

Specialty Intensives are week-long studies on a particular topic, often taught by senior faculty or special guest instructors. Courses are available in Improv, Writing, Acting, Music, and more! Specialty Intensives are offered in addition to our regular 5-Day Intensives in Improv, Writing, and Stand-Up.

Most Specialty Intensives require previous training or experience. Check the class descriptions for prerequisite information. If you do not meet the exact prerequisites, you may still be able to get approval by submitting your information to intensives@secondcity.com.

WHERE TO STAY IN CHICAGO? The Second City Training Center does not provide housing for students. Students are responsible for arranging their own accommodations. See our “Where To Stay” page for recommended hotels, hostels, and dormitories in the Chicago area, some with special rates for Second City students!

Improv for Actors 5-Day Intensive

The Improv for Actors 1 Intensive is a fast-paced course for actors interested in how to develop the essential tool of improv for rehearsal, performance, and auditions . Improv for Actors is geared toward both working and post-grad actors who are looking to expand their craft with skills of improvisation. IFA Intensive covers the fundamental elements of scene work, creating environment, and scenic transformation. Students acquire skills that can be applied to scripted and non-scripted work. Students become more improvisational in written moments and more confident when they improvise.

The Improv for Actors Intensive is appropriate for students who have a theatre degree, are currently enrolled in a full-length collegiate theater program, or have the equivalent amount of professional training and/or experience. Students must submit an acting résumé or description of related experience for consideration to be placed in this intensive. Please submit materials to intensives@secondcity.com. It is a half-day intensive which runs 9am-12pm each day.

About the instructor: Rachael Mason is the Head of Improvisation and creator of the Advanced Improv program and intensives at the Second City Training Center. She is an instructor at the Harold Ramis Film School and at Columbia College Chicago. Rachael is a Second City Touring Company alum.

Long Form Improv Intensive

Designed for students who have completed the Improv Intensives Levels 1 and 2 or equivalent classwork, the Long Form Intensive delves deeper into ensemble work and creating full-length improvised performance. Students will work on advanced scenic skills, character development and relationship, editing, and how to execute and design numerous different “forms” for long form performance. Over the course of the week, students will gain a deeper understanding of both their own improvisational style, working with an ensemble, and how to create a cohesive and entertaining long form improv piece.

Long Form Improv Intensive is open to students who have completed the Improv 2 5-Day Intensive or the equivalent of Improv Level B. It is a full-day intensive which runs 9am-4pm with a one-hour break.

Susan Messing has been improvising and performing for over 30 years and has been starring in the long-running hit show Messing with a Friend for the last 11. She teaches courses at The Second City, iO Theater, and The Annoyance Theatre, and is an instructor at DePaul University, The University of Chicago, and the School at Steppenwolf. Susan is a Second City alum.

Rachael and Susan have taught and performed around the world, and created the improv show The Boys.

Advanced Long Form: Improv Architecture

Interested in taking your form up to the next level? Want to create a new form? Sick of being in a “form box”? Once you are done with this class you will have new shiny skills to play with any ensemble in a structure that supports your group’s skill set and highlights your strengths. The class will be co-taught by Rachael Mason and Susan Messing who will tailor the curriculum to the group.

Advanced Long Form is open to students who have completed the Long Form Improv Intensive. It is a full-day intensive which runs 9am-4pm with a one-hour break.

Making the Improvised Movie Intensive

Making the Improvised Movie gives adult students the chance to do one of the most fun and unique classroom assignments we offer in the filmmaker program at The Harold Ramis Film School—the improvised movie! You will learn improv basics like creating from abundance, collaboration, and how to use improv to create content for the screen. Working in groups, you will then shoot short films that you improvise from start to finish. No script. Just filmmaking at its most fun and challenging. Through this accelerated 5-day process, you will learn the basics of writing, production, and collaborating on set.

Making the Improvised Movie Intensive is open to all students. It is a half-day Intensive which runs for a three-hour session each day and can be paired with another intensive class.

Storytelling Intensive

Whether you’re hoping to perform at a storytelling event or you just want to get better at telling the story from that one time at camp, this fast-paced, immersive introduction to the universal art of storytelling is the class for you. Over the course of a week, you’ll learn how to shape your stories to follow an engaging arc, take them through rewrites, and learn tricks of the trade to pull out entertaining details that can help you capture an audience’s attention. You’ll also work with your instructor to hone your individual presentational style, and walk out with next steps in mind for your stories and your path as a storyteller.

Writing for Late Night TV & Talk Shows Intensive

Write desk bits, remote segments, guest pieces, sketch and a variety of segments for shows like Fallon, Conan, Kimmel, Seth Myers, Colbert, Ellen and more. Pitch monologue jokes, brainstorm, explore and heighten material in this collaborative Writer’s Room environment. Create original material to strengthen your writing samples and produce the elements to put together your pitch packet for a talk show. Please bring a laptop or phone for Internet access.

About the instructor: Holly Wortell is an Emmy-nominated writer and a Second City alum. She has written and produced for The Bonnie Hunt Show and appeared in Entourage, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Life with Bonnie, and numerous radio and TV commercials. Holly is a guest instructor in Chicago for this course; she teaches online courses for the Second City Training Center, at Second City Hollywood, and at the Harold Ramis Film School.
