Through weekly visual story-telling exercises, analysis of film clips, and class discussion this course teaches you how to tap your own creativity, get the most out of a group of people while keeping your perspective, and how to block and direct actors. Students will learn ways of incorporating Second City’s practice of improvisation into traditional film work and will learn the basics of film directing by learning script analysis, coverage and one-ers, and the 180 rule.
Oscar-nominated director, John Hancock (Prancer, Bang the Drum Slowly, Let’s Scare Jessica to Death) brings his over 50 years of filmmaking experience to this class. His latest feature “The Girls of Summer”, which grew out of his work with HRFS, will be released soon. In addition to his eleven features, he has done a number of “Hill Street Blues” and “Twilight Zones.”
Students must have access to a computer, an internet connection, and a webcam.
