Writing for People with Anxiety

In a warm, welcoming class environment, we will work together to overcome anxieties and fears surrounding the sharing of your written work. Presenting ideas is a deeply personal experience, and it is natural to feel nervous about doing so. But when your nerves prevent you from even stepping up to the plate, you’re missing out on opportunities to improve your craft, benefit from the ideas of your peers, and simply have fun brainstorming with friends. In this class, you will gain the exposure and practice you need to unlock your creative potential, and embark on your journey as an artist.

This unique class retains the structure of a regular Second City writing class, so that you gain the tools and skills you would acquire in any other scriptwriting course. However, the presentation and feedback segments of each class will be conducted in a way that allows students to explore the limits of their comfort zones, while maintaining an atmosphere of ease and support. Feedback sessions are founded on the idea that practice in a low-stakes environment helps us acclimate to and be comfortable with sharing our ideas. Discussions will be structured and tailored to each individual’s needs, so that we receive useful feedback, which we feel prepared to handle. We will then be able to transfer these presentation skills to other projects and work environments.

The first half of class will revolve around writing topics, including story structure, character development, and scene structure. All types of script writing are welcome in this class: TV pilots, film scripts, and sketches. Our writing philosophy says that at the heart of any good story lie the same universal qualities, which can be effectively discussed across formats. Plus, feedback from individuals writing in different formats can lead to fertile discussions and rich discoveries.

If you have ever felt that fear has held you back from fulfilling your creative potential, this class is for you!
