    The Importance of Improv

"Why is this study so important?" this is a question we are asked often at the Training Centre. Whether or not you come to us because you want to be an actor or because you just want to improve your social skills, the importance of improv comes from the philosophy of "Yes and". Everyone fits in here and offers of all kinds are meant to be accepted. It is a happy place where everyone can agree and learn to accept each others offers. As former Second City Chicago Artistic Director Martin De Maat says "Greet everything with 'yes,and...'" "Make statements instead of putting the burden on others with questions." "Stay in the present, as opposed to focusing on the past or future." and "The fun is always on the other side of a yes." People come to The Second City Training Centre to live a more positive lifestyle and we are happy to be a part of it.

Student Focus Night with Ben Gordon!

Join us on January 23rd at 9pm in the John Candy Box Theatre for our first FREE Student Focus Night of 2013 with BEN GORDON!

Alumnus Ben Gordon appeared at The Old Fire Hall Theatre Mainstage in primarily two great companies (first and foremost with Dave Thomas, Catherine O'Hara, Andrea Martin and later with Robin Duke, Tony Rosato, Derek McGrath) and at other times with Eugene Levy, John Candy, Martin Short and once, with an interloping Robin Williams. He had the benefit of knowing and studying with SC legends Bernie Sahlins and Del Close.

His career has been both eclectic and award winning including starring and supporting credits in film, television and radio in both comedic and dramatic roles. In film he appeared opposite Oscar winner Rod Steiger, Burgess Meredith, James Garner, John Heard, Levon Helm and Alan Arkin.

As a performer and writer he has appeared or written in far too many sketch comedy, variety, situation comedy and award shows in both the US and Canada. (Including writing and producing "Lost Satellite Network" for Showtime! (US); "Just For Laughs" (NBC) and the perennially voted Worst Sit-Com Ever "Check It Out!" After many years out of the industry: battling cancer (cured); divorce (happily remarried) and running a family importing business (into the ground), Ben is looking forward to sharing his knowledge, insights and personal experiences with the next generation of Second City greats.
