Humor Writing for the Internet

You've got the chops and know you're funny, but now what? This class will examine some of the most popular written forms that dominate the Internet and will arm students with the know-how to get their pieces noticed, their Rolodexes filled with the contacts they need, and the ability to navigate the business side of the wide world of contributing for a heap of different online outlets. Students will develop ideas for their own web videos, find out why some podcasts work and others don't, cultivate and maintain a social media persona, write a short online humor piece, learn the difference between satirizing and just exploiting more sensitive current events, and learn what's involved with pitching pieces and, perhaps most importantly of all, getting paid for it all.

$340/$310 early registration, 3 hours, 8 weeks

Now that students have a firm grasp on creating for the web, it’s time to take a shot at being published. Humor Writing for the Internet 2 delves deeper into representing your work and getting others interested in it. Students will also learn about the logistics of producing a web series (assembling a crew, setting goals, and getting people to care about it), how to build an effective bio and portfolio site, and how to finesse their approach to a comedic Twitter account. The final week, students are put in the hot seat by pitching an original piece workshopped in the class to a real-world outlet of their choosing via email. It’s like a reality show, minus the camera!
