Story for TV & Film

Advanced sketch writers will explore visual writing, story structure and character development in preparation for creating work for film and TV. Through in-class exercises, analysis of scripts/films, and cumulative assignments focused on three-act structure and storytelling fundamentals, writers will learn what makes a compelling concept, where great ideas come from, and effective ways to build an engaging narrative, step by logical step, for the big or small screen.

Story development work includes creating synopses, loglines and titles for your original concept; crafting character bios; identifying the major turns/arc of your feature/first season; articulating how your story starts and ends; and mapping on cards the key scenes/sequences of your project—ideally culminating in an actionable outline or brief treatment that can be further developed in the Screenwriting or Writing for Television courses the next term.

NOTE: This course is now a prerequisite for Screenwriting and the Writing for Television courses.

$340/$310 early registration, 3 hours, 8 weeks
