Prizes

Three winning scripts will be read by professional actors at Judy’s Beat Lounge at The Second City Chicago in front of a live audience. Winners will also be given a copy of Final Draft, the industry’s finest screenwriting software.

We are pleased to announce that Karen Horne of NBC Entertainment and Universal Television Studios, Todd Milliner of Hazy Mills Productions, Thruline Entertainment (Los Angeles), MomentumTV (Los Angeles), and Laura Hilker of Creekside 10 Entertainment (Chicago, Los Angeles) will be joining the 2017 SCTC Comedy Screenplay Contest! All three scripts will be passed along to our contest partners. Winners will also be given a copy of Final Draft, the industry’s finest screenwriting software.

Grand Prize

The Grand Prize-winning teleplay will be read by professional actors on Thursday, June 1 at Judy’s Beat Lounge at The Second City Chicago in front of a live audience.

The 2017 SCTC Original Sitcom Contest is thrilled to announce that Karen Horne, Senior Vice President of Programming Talent Development & Inclusion for NBC Entertainment and Universal Television Studios, will be reading the top three scoring scripts and will select the Grand Prize Winner of the 2017 Original Sitcom Contest!

As part of the Grand Prize, Ms. Horne will meet the writer(s) either in person in Los Angeles or Chicago, or over Skype if the writer(s) is not local to LA or Chicago. Karen Horne is responsible for overseeing in-front-of and behind-the-camera primetime diversity efforts for NBC and Universal Television.  NBC’s Writers on the Verge Program, the Emerging Director Program, NBC’s StandUp for Diversity nationwide talent search and the NBCUniversal Short Film Festival are among the many programs she heads while also overseeing NBC’s Diversity Staffing Initiative and working with the creative programming team to identify diverse development.

The Grand Prize winner will also have their script sent to Thruline Entertainment, Momentum TV, and Creekside 10 Entertainment who will arrange a script consult via Skype or phone.

Founded in 2003, Thruline is a Beverly Hills-based management firm which boasts a roster of new voices as well as established award-winning clients comprised of actors, writers and directors working in television, film and theater. The company also has a production arm and has produced over 150 hours of scripted television for the major networks. Thruline enjoys a special relationship with The Second City and is committed to developing new comedic voices and introducing them to the professional community.

Todd Milliner, President of Hazy Mills Productions, is back!
Todd will read the Grand Prize winning script and have a consult with the winning writer(s)!
Hazy Mills Productions was founded by actor/producer Sean Hayes and long-time friend and producer, Todd Milliner. The company has had a very successful run of hit television shows and multi-genre shows, including Hot In Cleveland (TV-Land), Grimm (NBC), Hollywood Game Night (NBC), The Soul Man (TV-Land), Sean Saves The World (NBC) and recently Hair-Jacked (tru-TV). Most recently, they’ve added the highly acclaimed documentary The History of Comedy to their roster for CNN.

Judges

SCTC Original Sitcom Contest Judges consist of industry professionals with many years of combined experience in writing for Television and Film and also evaluating scripts. Scripts will be judged
on the following criteria:

Originality – Is there something out there just like it? Or is this an original concept? Perhaps it’s an original take on something that’s already been done.

Formatting – Is the script formatted correctly according to industry standards.

Structure – Is there an effective use of the three-act structure (most commonly used)? Framework of the script.

Humor – Is it funny?

Voice – Do the characters each have a distinct voice?

Pacing – The timing of the action, unfolding of plot elements and character development.

Style/Tone – Overall quality of the writing.

Commercial Appeal – Does it have audience and commercial appeal for the script’s particular niche?

Save $10 if you submit by March 1!

Judges’ Feedback – US$60 (Optional)
The judges will include up to 1.5 pages of script feedback for your script. Feedback may not be contested as part of the competition. Please allow up to two months after the reading of the winning scripts to receive feedback.
