Improv Games Camp for ages 7-9, 10-13 & 14-17

Think on your feet, be spontaneous and be a team player! Campers play fun improv games (like Whose Line is it Anyway?) to help access creativity, boost self-confidence and develop spontaneity and playfulness.

Great for Beginners – No experience is needed for these camps. Have a little or a lot of improv experience–you’ll have a blast either way!

Please note that attending camps does not lead to a credit in the seven-week Improv program.

Summer Comedy Camps

Summer Comedy Camps

  • Camps for ages 7-17

How fun does a Comedy Camp sound? Spend part of your summer at The Second City learning improv! Campers exercise their sense of play through improv games and exercises that are the foundation of The Second City’s unique brand of comedy. Our teachers will work with these young improvisers to help enhance their ability to communicate with others and develop confidence in their own creativity while working as part of an ensemble.

Please note that attending camps does not lead to a credit in the seven-week Improv program.

Improv Games Camp (ages 7-9, 10-13, 14-17)

Think on your feet, be spontaneous and be a team player! Campers play fun improv games (like Whose Line is it Anyway?) to help access creativity, boost self-confidence and develop spontaneity and playfulness. At the end of the week, campers get a chance to show their friends and family just what they’ve learned. Camps run from 9:00am – 4:00pm and are taught by talented, and experienced Second City instructors/actors.

Beginner – No experience is needed for these camps, have a little or a lot of improv experience you’ll have a blast either way!

PLEASE NOTE: We will be holding Improv Games Camps for those aged 10  – 13 off-site at Wychwood Barns (601 Christie Street) and Redwood Theatre (1300 Gerrard Street) the week of August 12 – 16. These camps are denoted in the class name!

Advanced Improv Games Camp (ages 14-17)

Advanced Improv is an exciting week of learning how to create full scenes with a beginning, middle, and end based on a single suggestion. Participants will learn the 5 point structure, heightening, platform, and tilt.

Advanced – Campers must have attended either Improv Games or Characterprov camps previously.

French Improv Games Camp (ages 10-17)

Think “sur tes pieds”—be spontaneous and a team player! Campers play fun improv games to help access creativity, boost self-confidence and develop spontaneity and playfulness – in French! At the end of the week, campers get a chance to show their friends and family just what they’ve learned.

Beginner – No experience is needed for these camps, have a little or a lot of improv experience you’ll have a blast either way!

Characterprov Camp (ages 10-13, 14-17)

Learn how to create large characters like on SCTV, Saturday Night Live and Funny or Die! Campers will explore physicality in silent scenes and play around with different devices for character creation. Campers will have a showcase at the end the week. Bring out your inner Mr. Bean. Camps run from 9:00am – 4:00pm and are taught by talented, and experienced Second City instructors/actors.

Empower-Prov Camp (ages 14-17)

The focus of this camp is empowerment. The participants will learn to take their confidence from the backline to centre stage. The curriculum will reinforce the belief that “you are enough.” It will help improvisers collaborate with their scene partners to create a dynamic story with compelling characters. Focus will be on leading the scene, owning the space, and winning over the audience.

Empower-Prov is open to students who identify as female. Beginner – No experience is needed for these camps, have a little or a lot of improv experience you’ll have a blast either way!

Teen Stand-Up Camp (ages 14-17)

Learn the fundamentals of stand-up comedy! Focus on a different joke format with students working individually, in pairs, and larger groups to develop writing and performance techniques.

Teens with Anxiety Improv Camp (ages 14-17)

This innovative camp uses ensemble-based improv to help people with social anxiety to overcome fear and avoidance associated with school, work, and family life. In a safe and nurturing environment, participants will be introduced to a number of tools they can use manage their anxiety.

Beginner – No experience is needed for these camps, have a little or a lot of improv experience you’ll have a blast either way!

Post-Summer Camp Games & Movies

After a day of improv, it’s time to relax and hang out! Students are allowed to watch a movie or play some board games. This optional activity hour lasts from 4:00-5:00pm.


Camp Breakdown

Here is the general breakdown that we follow for all of our camps:

  • 9:00am – 12:00pm
    • Get to know you/teambuilding games
    • Morning break
    • Skill development (focus, listening, collaborating, acceptance, support, courage, character development, emotional range, storytelling with an ensemble, teamwork, etc.)
  • 12:00 – 1:00pm
    • Lunch
    • Please note: kids bring their own snacks and lunch – no nuts please!
  • 1:00 – 3:00pm
    • More improv games!
    • Afternoon break
    • More skill development
  • 3:00 – 4:00pm
    • All camps meet in the John Candy Box Theatre for an end-of-day mash-up
      • Games on stage for all camps and an award ceremony
      • On Thursdays they are booked to see Second City’s Family Show on the Mainstage (downstairs, same building)
  • 4:00 – 5:00pm
    • Optional post-camp games and movies in the John Candy Box Theatre

We ask that kids are dressed comfortably with good shoes – there is quite a bit of movement incorporated into the curriculum! And water bottles so they can stay hydrated (we have a water dispenser)!
