In this Black Films Matter course you will explore the comedic sensibilities of black filmmakers in American cinema in four distinct eras. Each week you will watch a film and scenes from select films and be led by the instructor in discussion that will (1) place each film in its historical and societal context and (2) explore its similarities and differences with mainstream American cinematic comedies of the same eras. Each film shown will be black-written and black-directed and feature a predominately black cast. This film appreciation course is for all students of comedy at any level of experience to explore the potent, ambitious, brilliant, and too often marginalized perspectives of black American comedians.
